Advertisements in your bank statement? They’re already here.

In what at first brush seems as an obvious invasion of privacy advertisers are moving to tie promotions to your bank statement. The new service called Cardlytics will allow marketers to target consumers in terms of the actual transactions that they make. If you a a heavy user of McDonalds they will know and be able to offer you promotions through your statement. Upon accepting the promotion, the next time a purchase at McDonalds is recognized the price promotion will be automatically applied to your account. No coupons to carry, nothing to have to redeem.

While there are obvious concerns with privacy, however, the marketers no nothing more than where and how much you spend. It is in many ways less intrusive than being cookied and followed around the web. Educating the consumer will be the biggest issue as anything tied to the bank statement will raise eyebrows.

In study the opt-out rate has been very low and the potential for this new form of marketing seems to be quite high.
