Social Media Screw-Ups
In my PR Management class last night, we talked about what social media means for the future of PR in terms of crisis management. In February this year, Kevin Smith, the director of “Clerks” and “Chasing Amy” tweeted “Dear @SouthwestAir – I know I’m fat, but was Captain Leysath really justified in throwing me off a flight for which I was already seated?”. Smilth has 1.5 million Twitter followers, and this tweet had made a dramatic impact on Southwest Airlines. SW posted a blog as an apology to Smith.
While social media can build close customer relationship, it can also damage the image of a company within seconds. So, the question is, is social media doing us any good?
Here’s a brief history of “social media screw-ups”.
