What is the Monetary Value of a Facebook Friend?

November 11, 2010 Leave a comment

One of the things that we’ve been discussing this semester as part of the curriculum, for our ‘Interactive and Ecommunication’ class, are the new metrics that digital marketers are using to measure campaign success. An article today in the Wall Street Journal drives that point home with an exploration of how some marketers are striving to create fans instead of other types of conversation based on direct sales.

New Facebook Phishing Campaigns Run Amok

November 6, 2009 Leave a comment

During the past week, I have received 5 different emails from “Facebook” encouraging me to click on links to change my account setting, change my password, reinstall my account, etc. Fortunately, the emails seemed too convenient and smelled very much like a phishing attempt.

Dear Facebook user,

In an effort to make your online experience safer and more enjoyable, Facebook will be implementing a new login system that will affect all Facebook users. These changes will offer new features and increased account security.

Before you are able to use the new login system, you will be required to update your account.

Please click on the link below to update your account online now:

If you have any questions, reference our New User Guide.

Thanks,

The Facebook Team

One of the things that makes this attempt so diabolical is that they are well written and seemingly believable.

According to an article on Consumeraffairs.com, one of the current attempts includes am email attachment which is a password-stealing Trojan horse virus which, if login information is provided, will log into the user’s Facebook account and post things on the Wall of 25 of their friends.

Facebook Phishing email sample

This email claiming to be from Facebook is actually a well crafted phishing attempt designed to steal user login information

Bottom line: Beware of any email claiming to be from Facebook with an executable¬† link in it. Facebook will never send you a new password as an email attachment. To learn more, you can visit Facebook’s Security Center.

Interactive and Ecommunication

One of the challenges when starting a new blog is to get the ‘newness’ of it out of the way as soon as possible. After all, just because a blog is starting out doesn’t mean that it starts at square one – sometimes its starts in the middle of a conversation already in progress.

The purpose of this blog is no different. As members of Emerson College’s Integrated Marketing Communications program, the contributors to this blog have a history as marketers and as people who think about how to use digital tools and methodologies to further enhance the effectiveness and usefulness of online marketing and communication. More specifically, the contributors to this blog are exploring how people can use interactivity with the Internet and with one another as a way to enhance how we communicate, reach online consumers and do business.

Our goal is to share our findings over time with the people who most want to learn what we do. That would be you.

We don’t expect everything entered into this discussion to be cutting edge brilliance but we do expect that it will provide other contributors and readers alike with better insight into the progress that the world is making as we continue to develop and explore new ways to communicate online. We also hope to share with you ways to effectively measure these modes of communications, how to use these tools and technologies to do a better job of reaching consumers,¬† to entertain people and make the world come together.

Thanks for joining along and please feel free to become part of the conversation.
